CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW SHERLOCK HOLMES IS A MISOGYNIST BECAUSE HE IS????? AND THATS NOT SOMETHING IM PULLING OUT OF MY BUTT HE REALLY IS SEXIST

He is, though it is hard to tell sometimes if he just being rude because he is rude to everyone, or sexist. though a lot of his “rudeness” to females come from typical sexist tropes like commenting on her appearance or sexual activity and as much as I love Sherlock BBC it really is male dominated, all the female characters mainly act as plot devices, or there for chemistry for the male characters.

I love Sherlock and the series to bits, but they are far from the shining examples of modern feminism and gender equality.

no I mean yes bbc sherlock is a wank and a half but like canon holmes is a douchenozzle

from scandal, holmes says, “ When a woman thinks that her house is on fire, her instinct is at once to rush to the thing which she values most. It is a perfectly overpowering impulse, and I have more than once taken advantage of it.”

he makes a bunch of generalizations about women throughout the stories. its pretty clear he has all women pegged as romantic, soft, gentle, withering. which is why hes so astounded by irene adler i guess idk

but even just looking at his interaction with irene—watson says that she eclipsed the whole of her sex in holmes’ eyes. the very fact that he assigns her the name “the woman” speaks volumes. it means he has all women in one specific category, but with men, it is clearly different. he’s never met anyone he’s referred to as “the man” because there have been many men to challenge him. he assumes all women are meek and probably a little stupid. so when irene comes along, he calls her “the women,” referring to the fact that she was the only woman worthy enough to challenge him.

from sign of four, which is the one i always think of when i think of his misogyny,

“I would not tell them too much,” said Holmes. “Women are never to be entirely trusted — not the best of them.”

I did not pause to argue over this atrocious sentiment.”

watson knows whats up

anyway idk im just pissed because moffat says sherlock holmes isnt a misogynist character simply on the grounds that he protects women and would never hurt them

im sorry moffat i forgot we’re all little kittens that need to be taken care of by the big strong men. i guess that makes me the sexist one.

a+

I know people complain about this, but that was canon; Holmes was sexist. All men were sexist in some way back then; that was how it was. And yes, you can say modern times should change, but I think here it’s important to keep it as is. Making everything equal always won’t teach us anything; teaching equality is good, because we want people to recognize and work against it, not ignore it. Yes, Holmes can be a douche, but we love that douche. Yes, Sherlock has a lot wrong with it and Moffat is also a douche, but I love Sherlock, so.

yes sherlock holmes is a douche and hes also my favourite literary character. ive been exploring the modernized characterization for over a year now, i dont think my love for him is at all in question here. i have said multiple times how much i identify with him more closely than i ever expected. i love him. this post is not about me criticizing sherlock.

this post is about how i hate moffat. and how moffat fails to see the misogynist flaw in sherlock that acd knowingly inserted into his character. and how moffat defends this misogyny because he obviously doesnt think theres anything wrong with it.

Oh the originally works are highly flawed (if you don’t agree, please read again, and though the BBC series is getting closer to a less problematic story, it’s far from over.

Sherlock mirroring John.

Oh, look, another symptom of Asperger’s Syndrome, not sociopathy.

Okay, it’s unpopular opinion time. Ignore me if you wish.

Alright. Let me start this little rant by saying that I’m absolutely sick of people claiming Sherlock Holmes to be a ‘sociopath’. He isn’t. Allow me to also say that I know how similar Asperger’s and sociopathy can seem, in certain cases, and that’s because I was misdiagnosed as a sociopath awhile back. I have Asperger’s Syndrome. As does Sherlock.

Common symptoms of high-functioning sociopathy:

  • Superficial charm
  • Manipulative and conning
  • Grandiose sense of self
  • Pathological lying
  • Lack of remorse, shame, or guilt
  • Incapability to love
  • Need for stimulation
  • Lack of empathy/inability to relate
  • Irresponsibility
  • Lack of realistic life plan
  • Extreme intelligence

Common symptoms of high-functioning Asperger’s Syndrome:

  • Issues picking in on social cues (ex: When someone is upset with them, or being sarcastic, it’s very hard for them to tell)
  • Appear to lack empathy/inability to relate
  • His or her speech may be flat
  • Formal style of speaking
  • May avoid eye contact (me) or stare at others (Sherlock)
  • Talk a lot, usually on favorite subject; inability to tell when boring the listener
  • Internal thoughts are often verbalized (ex: Seeming blunt or rude by telling someone they’re stupid, merely because they have no filter)
  • Extremely heightened senses (GEE I WONDER WHY SHERLOCK CAN SMELL AND HEAR AND TASTE AND SEE EVERYTHING)
  • Highly intelligent/logical way of thinking
  • Tendency to mimic others, especially people they like (JAWN)
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Typically only keep few, very close friends
  • Can go days without speaking, and eating very little, especially when drained

SO NOW THAT THAT’S COVERED. Let’s move on, shall we?

Sherlock Holmes grew up with the Holmes family, a respectable family. Behavior is learned, especially for those with Asperger’s. Why is Sherlock so proper? Why is he so cunning? Why does he dress the way he does? Well, that may just have something to do with the people he grew up with.

Is he manipulating? Of course. Yet, isn’t Mycroft? Hm. I wonder where he learned that trait. Not only that, but he’s doing it for basic information, not just for pure entertainment as a sociopath would. Let’s be serious. He doesn’t fool around. Oh, did I mention that’s another symptom of Asperger’s? Conversation and action for purpose, not for pleasure; very precise.

Let’s also toy around with a very common controversial topic within the Sherlock fandom: Sherlock does feel. He does love. He does care. The whole reason he jumped was because he cared. He cares for John, he cares for Mrs. Hudson, and he cares for Lestrade. John is his best friend, Mrs. Hudson is his mother figure, and Lestrade is his friend and his work. Without those, he would have been nothing. It would have destroyed him. Therefore, he destroyed himself in sacrifice (which we all know was faked, blah, blah, but the sentiment is still there, blah, blah).

While Sherlock may not have the physically clumsy symptoms of those with Asperger’s (I don’t either), that’s typical for someone of his age, as it’s something you usually grow out of as you get older. Asperger’s is a lifelong disorder. It never goes away, and there’s no medication that targets each symptom. You treat what you can, and live with what you can’t.

His need for stimulation, I think, has to do with his basic frustration and his work, as a matter of fact. Sherlock does drugs. Okay? That’s common knowledge within this fandom. He likes his drugs. Why does he do them? Well, to quote him, ‘they help him think’.

In all reality, it’s somewhat correct. The drugs Sherlock takes heighten his senses to an even more extreme degree, making him the observant smartass that he is. Not only that, but they speed up his thought process, and mixing that all in with his intelligence level, makes for one smart cookie.

I also believe that he’s just…frustrated. It’s hard. It really is. He knows he’s not like everyone else, which is why he’s clung onto the sociopath nonsense. He truly believes that he is a sociopath, probably because he’s done research on it and saw a partial match. It was something, finally something, he could relate to. Because I did the same goddamn thing. He knows it doesn’t fit perfectly. Moriarty knows it doesn’t fit perfectly. ‘We both know that’s not quite true’. He knows. He just has nothing else to hold onto.

Rant over. Knowledge is power. Blah, blah, blah.

The end.

YES

I think the point of his original line is that he wants to be a sociopath, not that he actually is one.

The worst part was that Sherlock clearly spent a very long time on them.

Mycroft was equally disappointed.  He was getting ANOTHER umbrella cosy.

I love that my new head canon is that Sherlock knits.

Sherlock would totally do fancy colorwork. Or….worse….he’d do really fucking complicated lace knitting. And he’d probably chart all the designs himself. And he’d never use lifelines either, the smug bastard.
Or maybe he’d just do socks. Lots of socks. With ridiculously thin yarn on US size 00’s.
He would always use the best yarn he could find. Nothing visibly flashy (probably mostly black) but very, very expensive fine fibers.
He would definitely make socks for John. And Lestrade. And when he gave them away he’d be half bragging and half shy. And when he spotted people wearing the socks he knit he would never say anything but he’d be secretly pleased. Either that or he’d congratulate you on your excellent taste in socks.
He’d walk up to random strangers in knitwear to inspect the design and totally creep them out. He’d avoid knitting circles because of all the small talk and the urge to deduce everyone there. He’d disdain most other knitters and their projects for being too boring and he’d point out all your mistakes. He’d also gleefully point out the places where your gauge changed and be able to figure out what had you so stressed out that your tension was uneven.
Anytime he made a mistake or realized he didn’t like the project he was working on, he’d just throw it into the fire or melt it with acid out of impatience. Or he’d stab the needles into the wall, and John would find them there the next day, with the half-done project hanging off.
He’d knit in the back of cabs on the way to and from crime scenes. He’d knit while watching crap telly. He’d knit while lying upside-down half off the couch. He was hoping it would help him quit smoking, and instead he just figured out how to smoke and knit at the same time. He tried to walk and knit at the same time, until he was on a complicated bit and walked right into traffic and almost got run over, and John asked him to stop.
Half-finished knitting projects would be all over the flat. John would forever be cursing at Sherlock for leaving projects between the cushions of the couch and where he’d accidentally sit on them and get poked in the butt.
Sherlock can never find his needles and always just ends up buying more.
The employees of the local yarn store are terrified of Sherlock. But he refuses to buy yarn he can’t see in person and touch first, and he does spend a lot of money there on special orders, so they bravely put up with him.
Oh god, I could go on like this all night.
